A study of the theories, processes, and acquisition of reading and language skills. Emphasis is on the cognitive, linguistic, social and physiological factors involved in oral and written language development. Emergent literacy and the relationship between language and reading acquisition are explored, including an examination of strategies for developing oral reading, comprehension, and literacy skills and techniques for building word recognition, phonics, integrating reading and writing, and comprehension based on the science of reading.
